Smart thermostats have been on the market for more than a decade. Their popularity is largely due to the energy savings and convenience they provide with cool features such as self-programming and remote control. Today's models are even smarter, offering a variety of advanced features that can make your life more convenient, comfortable and efficient. Here's the latest.

Remote room sensors

Some smart thermostat models can be integrated with remote sensors placed in rooms throughout the home. Sensors can detect occupancy, room temperature and even humidity level and make adjustments to ensure more uniform comfort around your home. Sensors may come packaged with the thermostat or you may have to purchase some or all of them separately, depending on the model.

Indoor air quality monitoring

Built-in indoor air quality sensors can detect humidity levels, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon dioxide levels and alert you whenever any of these measures reach unhealthy levels.

Interactive displays

More smart thermostat models are including colorful, interactive displays. Users can easily adjust settings using the simple, interactive touchscreen. Colorful displays offer a world of information, including indoor temperature and humidity levels, air quality levels, current weather conditions, weather forecasts and more, depending on the model.

Turn your thermostat into a smart home security hub by integrating it with other smart devices — such as video doorbells, smart security cameras, window and door sensors and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. This capability is only available with certain models, and you may have to purchase additional compatible devices. Check with the thermostat manufacturer about individual features and compatibility.

Integrated voice control

Many smart thermostat models are compatible with voice assistants, but some newer models have voice control built right in. You can talk to your thermostat, make adjustments and get information, all without a third-party voice assistant acting as a go-between.

Smart thermostat models with these and other advanced features can be a little pricey — up to $200 or more. However, the extra savings, security and convenience can make the investment more than worth it. Plus, Beltrami Electric Cooperative offers a rebate of 50% of the purchase price, up to $50.

If you are considering upgrading your thermostat, make sure your unit is ENERGY STAR®-certified. ENERGY STAR smart thermostats are independently tested to ensure energy savings and performance.
