What’s happening:
Extreme cold across the region is driving unusually high electricity demand. In response, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, known as MISO, has issued multiple Maximum Generation Events to protect grid reliability.
Why it matters:
MISO oversees the regional electric grid and balances electricity supply and demand in real time. When demand approaches system limits, MISO calls a Max Generation Event to ensure enough power is available and to prevent larger disruptions.
MISO directs Minnkota Power Cooperative, Beltrami Electric’s wholesale power provider, to fully initiate its demand response program during these periods.
How the Off-Peak Program Helps
The off-peak program is a key tool during periods of extreme demand. By reducing electricity use, it helps limit the need to purchase expensive supplemental power on the wholesale market.
Wholesale energy prices are currently extremely high due to sustained cold temperatures, winter storms impacting the southern United States, and added strain on electric generation and transmission systems. Managing demand during peak periods helps protect the cooperative from these costs, which ultimately benefits all members.
Members participating in off-peak and load management programs may experience extended control of certain electric loads during these events. These measures are necessary to maintain reliability across the system.
What We’re Doing
Beltrami Electric and Minnkota Power are monitoring grid conditions around the clock and coordinating closely with MISO. Our priority is to keep the electric system reliable while minimizing exposure to volatile wholesale power prices.
We will continue providing updates on our website and social media channels as conditions change. Members can also view the current status of demand response through our load management status page.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work through these extreme weather conditions together. Please stay warm and stay safe.
