We all appreciate the beauty and environmental benefits of trees and other landscaping. Unfortunately, many power outages are caused by trees and limbs falling on power lines during bad weather, interrupting the continuous electric service that Beltrami Electric members have come to expect and deserve.

Beltrami Electric Cooperative believes trees are an important part of our environment and communities. Trees are nature's sentries: screening out the scorching summer sun and buffering the brutal winter winds. Besides offering significant energy savings by providing summer shade and winter protection, trees help absorb noise, provide privacy, freshen and replenish the atmosphere and attract wildlife. However, falling trees and tree branches are a major cause of power outages or power blinks.

Larger trees that are planted around utility right of ways create a dangerous safety hazard by providing children an opportunity to play near power lines. When a tree limb comes in contact with a power line, there is a definite possibility of shock injury or fatal electrocution to a child or adult touching or climbing the tree.

To avoid dangerous situations and to maintain reliability, BEC supports the philosophy of, "the right tree in the right place."

As you landscape your property, remember to "look up" and keep these few tips in mind:

  • Plant the right tree in the right place. Never plant vegetation too close or under power lines.
  • Follow the guidelines in the tree planting guide.Plant Trees Safely graphic
  • Report any trees that may threaten the cooperative's equipment.
  • Always call before you dig. Anyone digging in Minnesota must call or 8-1-1 before they begin digging. GSOC is a free service designed to protect you and your property from underground utility damage and liability.
